About CAEX Bushwalking Club

CAEX Bushwalking Club was formed in June 1982 by ex-members of a bushwalking course conducted at the Council of Adult Education (CAE), hence our name, CAEX – pronounced ‘cakes’. From 1986 to 1998 the club conducted bushwalking courses at the CAE itself, and many of our members joined the club after completing one of these courses. The club has had no connection with the CAE since 2000.

Our motto is “Bushwalking for Pleasure”

CAEX has approximately 45 members from all walks of life from age from 50 to 80+. Many of our members are retired but remain active.  We pride ourselves on being a friendly, social and welcoming club and particularly welcome new members with little or no previous bushwalking experience.

Our tradition is that the activity leader bring a cake to share at the end of the walk or activity. Participants bring their own tea/coffee.

The club caters to a range of interests and skill levels. The walks program aims to offer a range of easy-medium walks with the occasional harder walk. Most of our walks are day walks which are usually held on Sundays throughout the year. Weekend trips, either camping or staying in caravan parks or moderately priced accommodation are also very popular. The club usually has one or two lodge-based weekends each year and occasionally organises ‘expeditions’ interstate. Our activities have a strong social element, both on walks and other social activities such as restaurant nights and BBQs, held several times a year.  We encourage car pooling whenever possible.

CAEX does not have club rooms.  We typically hold only one formal meeting a year, our Annual General Meeting, which takes place in February.  The club uses this website, a monthly e-newsletter and email to communicate with members. CAEX is run by members who volunteer their time and we welcome new members to become involved.

CAEX is an affiliate member of Bushwalking Victoria (BWV), the peak body for bushwalking in Victoria, which represents and promotes the interests of all bushwalkers. CAEX was the recipient of a Distinguished Service Award from Bushwalking Victoria in 2009 for its contribution to bushwalking, in particular through the bushwalking courses we conducted at the Council of Adult Education from 1986 to 1999, which introduced about 1,000 people to bushwalking, and our contribution to Bushwalking Victoria itself.
