Yarra Flats Loop

TRY BUSHWALKING MONTH WALK

CLUB NAME:  CAEX

WALK NAME:  Yarra Flats Loop from Heidelberg

WALK SUMMARY:  Many of you will be surprised by this pleasant walk from Darebin to Heidelberg.  Following the Darebin Creek and Yarra River, we meander travelling upriver past glimpses of golf courses and the Yarra River flowing gently on its way.

Streeton and Roberts used this same back drop for many of their paintings, and the walk does pass close to Napier Waller’s house

This is a fascinating walk through this bushland on Melbourne’s doorstep and is a gentle stroll, on well-formed paths while maintaining a genuine bushwalk feel where you will take in both historic and natural scenes.

There will of course be the obligatory CAEX Cake at the end of the walk.

There is a train ride included in this adventure so please bring your Myki

DATE and TIME: Sunday 28th September 9:15am (walk starts at 9:30am).

DISTANCE: 10km return and will take around 3.5 hours

WHO IS THIS WALK FOR?:  This walk will suit both experienced bushwalkers and inexperienced but fit newcomers.  We are keen to connect with bushwalkers who are experienced and are interested in joining a club, especially people thinking about retirement including singles and couples.  It will also be suitable for those are new to bushwalking but are fit and curious about the bush and about how to get involved without getting lost.

AWT GRADE: This is graded Level 2 in the AWTGS grading system – ‘Suitable for most ages and fitness levels. Some bushwalking experience recommended. Tracks may have short steep hill sections a rough surface and many steps.’

PACE:  The pace will be slow and steady and we will not leave anyone behind.  We will re-group at regular intervals as needed, and will have stops for lunch and snacks where you can sit down.

TOTAL ASCENT: 65m gain which is pretty easy going.  There is one short jump up that is quite steep but again well sealed and we can take our time.

WALK DESCRIPTION:  The walk follows first the Darebin Creek Trail then the Main Yarra trail but you will believe you are in a remote bush setting for most of the walk.  There is a short flat section along the freeway but apart from that you will be surrounded by natural beauty with glimpses of suburbia.

During the walk there will be short introductions to the art history of this area by way of information boards along our walk.

MEETING POINT:  Meeting point information will be provided at time of registration

PUBLIC TRANSPORT:  We’ll be using Public transport as part of this adventure so why not make it a day on the train and leave the car behind.

PHONE SIGNAL: There is mobile phone cover on this walk.

TOILETS: There are toilets near the start and end of our walk and at nearby Heidelberg station.  There are no toilets where we plan to stop for lunch.
